Between the two of us, we have 50 years of experience in
clay. While LeaAyne had the benefit of teachers, Michael worked it out
for himself. LeaAyne studied under Al Johnsen at the University of
California at Santa Cruz. Michael is mostly self-taught, but has
attended numerous workshops.
Currently, we are exploring macro-crystalline glazes.
Through manipulation of glaze chemistry and kiln firing, large crystals
form in the glaze. The precision and attention to detail required in
glaze chemistry, glaze application and kiln scheduling appeals to us as
ceramic scientists. In spite of all this care, each kiln load is an
adventure. We set the stage, but the glaze follows its own script.
Happy accidents are frequent as well as the occasional abject failure.
We enjoy making pottery that is attractive and useful.
